Planning | Harris Lake Drainage Basin Land Use Study
The Harris Lake Drainage Basin Study was intended to inventory, analyze and address the unique issues regarding land use in the vicinity of a nuclear power plant facility. The first phase of the plan involved development of an area profile for this southwestern portion of Wake County along with development of case studies and comparison with four other nuclear power plant locations in eastern US – Calvert Cliffs, Maryland; Indian Point, New York; Limerick Power Station, Pennsylvania and McQuire Power Station, North Carolina. The second phase of the plan involved development of three potential land use scenarios – low, moderate and high intensity land use options that seek to keep residential development to low densities within 5 miles of the plant while allowing varying levels of intensity of non-residential development along the US 1 Highway corridor that includes a future interchange with I-540. The third phase of the plan involved an assessment and projection of transportation facility needs for current conditions and each of the three development scenarios.
