The Town of Tarboro operated a 3 mgd Wa- ter Treatment Plant designed by The Wooten Company. The Wooten Company prepared a study identifying the need for additional supply and water treatment ca- pacity. Recommendations were made to increase the treatment plant capacity to 6.0 mgd. The upgrade and expansion included a new raw water intake and pumping station, new rapid mix and flocculation, high rating the filters including new instrumentation and controls, alum sludge handling facility, new liquid chemical feed facilities, new laboratory, and building addition. The in- strumentation was designed to be easily adapted to a computer SCADA system.

The plant is configured as follows:

  • Flash Mixer: 2 HP vertical mixer
  • Flocculation Basin: 2 basins with 3 compartments horizontal flocculation
  • Sedimentation Basins: 6 2-hour retention
  • Filters: 6 filters @ 175 sq. ft. each 4 gpm per sq. ft. filtration rate
  • Clearwell: 1,000,000 gallons
  • Alum Sludge Storage Facility:
  • 250,000 gallon equalization basin Decant and sludge are pumped to wastewater treatment plant

In 1997 & 1999 the Town upgraded the SCADA/Quality Control System, filter face values, rebuilt filters including reworking filter bottoms, new chemical feed facilities and new flocculators. The construction was phased for over 4 years to allow "pay as you go" project financing.
