Benson's Wastewater Treatment Plant was originally constructed in 1964 as a facultative lagoon. The Wooten Company provided engineering services for the tertiary treatment facility. The tertiary treatment facility provides for phosphorous removal and meets the stringent treatment requirements for discharge to the nutrient sensitive Neuse River. Project funding was secured from the Environmental Protection Agency, the North Carolina Clean Water Bond Fund, and Senate Bill 2 appropriation.
