The town has a 2 mgd conventional water treatment facility with a run-of-river intake on the Haw River. The raw water is high in bromide at times. Free chlorine is used for disinfection. The town has had trouble meeting the TOC removal requirements and the TTHM MCL of the Stage 1 Disinfectants/Disinfection By-products Rule. The Wooten Company completed a study for the town that recommended enhanced coagulation improvements and chloramination for secondary disinfection.
